Day 98: Time to wrap up the project #4 - Complex technical drawing and Broken pipe#1

Complex technical drawing for pipe structures (Day 22)

This drawing provides a better understanding of complex pipe structures. I looked up some photos on line to see how varied pipe construction is used in industrial sites and how I can translate the structural mechanism into my work. This pencil drawing on paper shows 12 different pipe ways, 3~4 various sizes of pipes and 3~5 special component pieces that I need to make.

Broken pipe connected : Sandblasted brass, enamel paint and neoprene (Day 55)

It is quite a weird time. Everything seems normal but nothing is the way it used to be. Life has definitely shrunk. We are still connected but there exists pain and suffering. I had to deal with this racist a couple of months ago. I was on the city tram and racially abused by him. He said, “Our country was not like this before you came in. You better be careful!”. Even though I stood up for myself, I yelled at him and chased him off the tram I was quite sad and have been lethargic since then. “Broken pipe” was just like my spirit at that time but now I have some beautiful red neoprene string to reconnect it again. We all need something to empower us and restore spirit and strength, so we can trust each other again.

Bent tubes - pendant : Brass and neoprene (Day 62)

I used three different tube benders to make this pendant but threading a red neoprene cord through was something that took a lot of patience. Threading through the curve the red neoprene was stopped so frequently as the inside of the curve was not clean enough. Possibly it was blocked by flux when I was soldering two different sizes of bent tubes together. I had to burn the flux inside the tubes first and put it in the pickle. After repeating this process several times I could thread it through. I was obsessed with the process because I needed to see that it worked and it did indeed! I actually think I could create a possible new series by bending tubes. It looks simple but I think the curves give a lot of elegance.

복잡한 파이프 구조 도안: 이 그림은 파이프로 만들어진 복잡 가능한 구조를 더 잘 이해하기 위해서 만들어졌다. 산업현장에서 파이프 구조물이 얼마나 다양한지와 이런 구조 매커니즘을 내 작은 사이즈의 작업에 어떻게 가져올 수 있는 지를 보기 위해서 몇가지 사진을 인터넷에서 찾아 보았다. 이 종이 위 연필 드로잉은 내가 만들어야 할 12가지 다양한 파이프 길과, 3~4가지 다양한 파이프 사이즈 그리고 3~5 특수 부품 조각 등을 보여주고 있다.

부서진 파이프- 연결되다 - 분사 표면 황동과 에나멜 페인트: 우리는 이상한 시대에 살고 있다. 모든것이 예전하고 비슷한 듯 하지만 삶의 테두리는 줄어들었다. 우리는 여전히 연결되어 있지만 고통과 괴로움은 존재한다. 몇주 전 나는 한 인종차별주의자를 대면해야 했다. 나는 시티 트램을 타고 있었고 한 인종차별자에게 위협을 받았다. 그가 말하기를 “우리나라는 너네가 들어오기 전까지 이렇지 않았다. 너 조심해라” 나는 나 자신을 변호했고, 그에게 소리쳤으며 그래서 그를 트램에서 몰아냈다. 그래도 한동한 참 슬펐고 무기력했었다. 

“부서진 파이프” 는 그때의 내 정신 같다. 그러나 나는 이 아름다운 빨간 네오프린 끈으로 이를 다시 연결시켰다. 우리는 모두 다시 서로를 신뢰할 수 있는 영혼과 힘을 재충전할 무언가가 필요하다. 

구부린 튜브들- 황동과 네오프린: 여기서는 3개의 다른 크기의 구부리게가 사용되었지만 빨간 네오프린 줄을 그 안으로 꿰어넣는 것은 참 인내심이 필요한 것이었다. 커브라인에서 자꾸 네오프린 줄이 꿰어지기를 멈추었고 그 이유는 튜브 안쪽이 깨끗하지 않아서 였다. 아마도 2개의 다른 사이즈의 파이프를 함께 땜하는 과정에서 플럭스가 튜브 안쪽에 막혀있었을 것이라 짐작한다. 그래서 그 안에 막혀있는 플럭스를 우선 태우고 피클에 넣어 보았다. 이 과정을 여러번 반복한 후 나는 겨우 줄을 끝까지 잘 꿸수가 있었다. 이 과정에 굉장히 집착하였으나 난 이 팬던트가 성공적으로 만들어지는 과정을 보아야 했고 결국은 그 성공을 볼 수 있었다. 어쨌든 나는 또 하나의 시리즈 탄생을 만들 가능성이 있는 새로운 작업을 튜브를 구부리는 것으로 만들어냈다. 간단하게 보이지만 곡선이 주는 어떤 우아함이 이 안에 있다.
