Day 66: the Key structure

This pipe structure with the secret old key is one of my favourites so far. Patina, liver of sulphur and aluminium dioxide sand have been used for the surface and all four components (two brass tube structures, mild steel, an old toy key and one component made by using the parts and fittings of an old watch - I call this ‘a jewel’ for pipe structures. They are all connected with screw-cut wire and chenier. 

I have found using patina after being dipped in the liver of sulphur water made the colour deeper and even though it is on a small scale pipes the colour makes the object achieve dimensions. For the little toy key I only used patina after sandblasting. This key made of mild steel is an operation key for my daughter’s toy robot and we thought we had lost it somewhere a long time ago, we found it while my partner and daughter were gardening. Without this key her robot will not have any movement so that it was such a joy to find it even though it was quite rusty. I love that it symbolises something important for her play and it is a key for movement. Now it has become a great part of my new collection.

“the Key structure”

비밀의 오래된 열쇠와 함께 만들어진 이 파이프 구조물은 내가 좋아하는 것 중의 하나이다. 파티나, 황간착색물, 그리고 이산화 알루미늄 가루가 표면착색에 사용되었고 네개의 구조들 (두개의 만들어진 황동 파이프 구조물, 연강으로 된 오래된 열쇠, 그리고 오래된 시계의 부품들로 만들어진 하나의 부속품-이것을 나는 내가 만든 파이프 구조물의 장신구/보석 이라고 부른다)이 와이어나 튜브의 끝을 나사로 만들어 연결되어 있다. 

나는 황간착색물에 한번 담그었다가 파티나를 사용하는 것이 표면 색을 더 깊게 만들고 작은 크기의 파이프 구조물에 사용되었음에도 그 색이 오브제를 더 무게있게 만든다. 작은 장난감 열쇠에는 분사기 사용 후 파티나만 썼을 뿐이다. 이 연강으로 만들어진 열쇠는 내 딸의 장난감 로보트의 작동 열쇠로 우리는 오래전에 이를 잃어버렸다고 생각했었다. 그런데 남편과 딸이 정원을 돌보던 도중에 다시 발견되었던 것이다. 이 열쇠가 없이는 로봇은 어떤 움직임도 갖지 못해 비록 녹슬기는 했어도 그것을 찾아낸 것이 아주 큰 기쁨을 선사했다.  나는 그것이 내 딸의 놀이에 하나의 중요성을 상징하는 것과 움직임의 열쇠였다는 것이 참 맘에 든다. 이제 그것은 내 새로운 작품의 중요한 한 부분이 되었다.
