Day 56: Sandblasted and Patina

“Broken pipe” has been cleaned and sandblasted today.

I love sandblasted brass. It is such a matt clean colour on the surface and it shows the structure subtly and gives prominence. I think it looks close to the pipes I see in our building but it needs something more. That has been annoying me and I have been thinking about all the different ways to make the surface look dusty, old and faded.

Thanks to my studio mate and colleague, Ann I have discovered patina chemical. Ann kindly let me try some for my pipe. The video image of test piece is below. I will study this little booklet introducing patinas, coatings, and metal finishing products a bit more and write about it more. Exciting!

오늘은 “부서진 파이프” 를 다듬고 분사기로 표면을 청소하였다. 분사기 표면처리된 황동을 난 참 좋아한다. 참으로 무광으로 깨끗한 색이며 그래서 그 구조를 은은하고도 분명하게 보여준다. 그래서 건물안에 있는 파이프들과 조금 비슷해 보이기는 하지만 난 좀 더 가까와지기를 바란다. 그것이 지금까지 나를 좀 성가시게 하는데 어떻게 하면 먼지로 덮이고, 낡고 색이 바랜 표면을 만들 수 있을지 여러방면으로 생각해보고 있다. 

그런데 고맙게도 스튜디오 동료인 앤 덕분에 그녀의 책상 위에 있는 파티나(녹청) 화학물을 보게되었다. 친절하게도 앤은 내게 파이프에 조금 시도해 보도록 허락하였다. 그래서 테스트를 한 조각의 비디오 이미지가 아래에 첨부되었다. 녹청, 코팅, 그리고 금속 마무리 표면기법을 할 수 있는 화학물 상품들이 소개된 작은 책자를 좀더 공부하여 여기에 대해서 좀 더 쓰고 싶다. 신난다!!
