Day 18: cactus (선인장)

It is said that the language of the cactus flower is reckless love and passion. In Mexico the symbol of the cactus is a burning heart. Cactus grows in desert where the weather is so hot and dry but it saves the water in the body whenever it rains. The hard shell of cactus stops water seeping away and the prickles covering cactus are leaves and the flowers bring brightness. The thorns protect cactus from being eaten by animals.

These days I feel like I am carrying a burning heart. Sometimes everything seems unfair and doesn’t work for me. Often I say things unnecessary, untruthful and unkind, which makes me more angry and lost in the end.

Keep the water in me when it rains. Blossom instead of pricking with thorns.

Before and after: Different silver stud from cup(left) to flat(right)

I made silver cup stud and cactus dangling earrings, which were sold to a client through Studio Ingot. (Image above) However, I had to change the stud from cup to the flat shape to fit in the client’s earlobes. They turn out looking different after I had to make another stud (right). I could also repurpose silver perforated cup stud to hook earrings. It was a not bad result.

선인장의 꽃말은 무모한 사랑 혹은 열정이라고들 한다. 원산지는 멕시코이며 그곳에서의 꽃말은 ‘불타는 마음’이다. 선인장은 아주 덥고 건조한 사막에서 자라서 비가 올 때마다 그 뚱뚱한 몸에 물을 저장하다. 선인장의 딱딱한 껍질은 물이 빠져나가는 것을 막고 둘러쌓여있는 가시는 선인장에게는 잎인데 결국은 꽃으로 변한다. 가시는 동물로 부터 물리게 하는 것을 방지해주는 역할도 한다. 

근래 나는 마치 불타는 마음 같다. 때로 모든 것들이 불공평하고 나하고는 맞지 않는 것 같다. 때로 나는 불필요하고 진실이 아닌 것 같으며 친절하지 않은 말들을 지껄여 그것으로 인해 더 화나고 더 길을 잃은 듯해진다. 비가 올때는 물을 저장하자. 찌르는 가시 보다는 꽃을 피우리라… 

위의 은컵 모양의 스터드와 선인장 모양의 달랑거리는 귀걸이는 스튜디오 인곳을 통해 한 클라이언트가 사갔었다. 그러나 그분의 귓밥 모양에 더 잘 맞는 형태의 귀걸이를 만들기 위해서 컵모양에서 납작한 원 모양으로 다시 만들어야했다. 납작한 형태(오른쪽)를 만든 후 형태가 좀 달라졌으나 이전의 은 천공 컵은 후크 귀걸이로 다시 사용되어지도록 만들어 졌다. 나쁜 결과는 아니다.
