“Making jewellery is all about creating wearable unpredicted forms”

Day 31: Lockdown no.4

Day 31: Lockdown no.4

Today a 7 day snap lockdown is announced in Victoria. Here we go again with staying home and homeschooling for school kids. It is frustrating especially how slow the vaccine rolling out is in Australia but I can call for register vaccination as new rule for over 40. Even though this is not the first time of restriction but I never get used to this- still there are too many concerns and worries upon it.

Meanwhile I picked up my work from powdercoaters and the colour, green was perfect. I have made a couple of new things for my tube structures. However, I filled in one competition application today and here is the revised artist’s statement and description. Also new photo of this brooch has been taken.

My Pink Balloons” Brooch. 2020.  48 (width) x 43 (length) x 34 (depth) mm

: Powdercoated perforated mildsteel, enamel painted silver and bleached silver, steel.

Pink is one of the most beautiful natural colours. We find pink in minerals, flowers, birds, moth, salt lake, sand on the beach, and even dolphins living in Amazon River. It is not just little girls’ colour.  In 2019 I introduced this stunning colour into my work and since then I have encountered and developed good conceptual and structural design solutions.

For a long time I have been thinking of pink and couldn’t get rid of the intuitive images of pink balloons from my head. I tried to visualise how the pink balloons’ shape and the way they swarm together to bring the form and colours into my work. I needed to decide the numbers of balloons, the shape and the physical connection between them then the wearability of this object. Planting 3 pink balloons on a white drawing board with a distinctive red circle makes it look like directions on a map. It also shows the dissimilar geometry of three and two dimensional spheres at the same time on the same work.

Jin Ah Jo’s artist’s statement:

I create unexpected, reconstructed and deconstructed wearable forms that are designed to be intriguing and exciting to the wearers.

Inspired by deconstructive architecture practitioners such as Frank Gehry who question architecture in a philosophical context, I try to get my work to question existing well-known forms by changing them into completely dissimilar structures. I try to be intuitive when I am in the process of construction at the same time I plan to ensure accuracy and balance.

The main material I use is perforated or patterned metal sheet, cut precisely so the forms look random and unpredictable. I find manipulating perforated metal fascinating because even in a simple cube, sphere or cylinder there is much more depth to the shape. I refer to this as the visual language of the material where the overlapping circle, square or hexagon holes creates unanticipated patterns with depth and distance.

My goal is to make each piece as exciting as possible. To this end I use my intuition to mix intense colour with poetic structure. I want each piece to talk and express their own language without hesitation, so when viewers see and wear the works they can immediately respond. The wearability in my work is the visual connection between form and body, unexpected space and structure.
