Day 30: A charming component from old watch

One of my studio buddies, Ann, gave me some parts and fittings from an old watch last week. The circular shape which looks like a handle or peace symbol is made of brass and I transformed it to be part of the pipe structure. It was so charming!  I soldered 2mm wire and another size tube at the back of this part and cut thread for a bolt. The bolt was a perfect fit with any of the nuts on the pipe structures I have made already.

This interchangeability gives me a lot of freedom to make variants of structure with the same components. This is a new step since April when I got inspired by the pipe structures in Mycelium Studios where my studio resides.

The structure with components I created today can be varied in many different ways and directions. I can’t think of any vivid ideas as to how I can install these structures for the show in September. However, at the same time I also consider its wearability somehow by attaching brooch fittings with bolts and nuts. I still happen to think about the possible function of what I have made like wearability all the time, which I can’t help as a jeweller but I will not be obsessed with the idea. Instead I enjoy the freedom through all of this experiment with different materials, techniques and scales.

It is getting really cold and there has been more COVID cases in Victoria State over night. I am nervous what if lockdown happens again but at the moment I am in the studio today.

함께 작업실을 쓰는 앤으로 부터 오래된 시계의 부품을 지난 주에 받았다. 손잡이 같기도 하고 평화의 심볼 같기도한 둥근 모양의 형태는 황동으로 만들어졌고 나는 그것을 파이프 구조의 한 부분으로 변환시켰다. 참 매력적이었다. 2미리의 은선과 다른 사이트의 튜브를 그 형태의 뒤에 붙이고 볼트를 만들었다. 그 볼트는 완벽했으면 내가 만든 어떤 넛츠와 꼭 맞아 들어갔다. 

이 교환가능성은 내게 같은 부품으로 여러 형태의 구조를 만들 수 있는 많은 자유를 주었다. 이것은 내 작업실이 있는 마이셀리움 스튜디오의 파이프 구조물로 부터 4월 처음 영감을 받은 이후로 한발 나아간 것이다. 

오늘 내가 만든 부품을로 만든 구조물은 많은 다른 방법과 방향으로 다양하게 변할 수 잇다. 9월에 있을 전시회를 위한 이 구조들을 어떻게 설치할 것인가에 대한 명확한 아이디어가 잇는 것은 아니다. 하지만 동시에 볼트와 너트를 사용한 브로치 피팅을 붙여서 착용성을 고려하고 있기도 하다. 착용성같은 가능한 기능에 대한 생각이 여전히 떠오르며 장신구 작가로서 이를 멈출수는 없다. 그러나 나는 이 생각에 사로잡히지는 않을 것이다. 대신에 많은 다양한 재료, 테크닉 그리고 크기로 실험을 통한 자유를 즐기고 싶다. 

이제 정말 추워지고 있고 빅토리아 주의 코비드 케이스가 밤사이 더 생겼다. 봉쇄조치가 다시 내려지지는 않을까 두렵지만 지금은 여기 스튜디오에 있다.
