Day 15: Composition
Composition in art is essentially the arrangement of visual elements using various principles and techniques. It is often used to describe the overall design of a painting. A well composed painting will intrigue and invite the viewer and help communicate the artist's statement…. The Elements of Composition are, in Western art, generally considered to be: Balance, Contrast, Focus, Motion, Pattern, Proportion, Rhythm and Unity. : A Comprehensive to composition for Artists
When I apply this rule to contemporary jewellery the composition is almost everything to what I make. Good composition means good balance to me, my work and the way I appreciate art. However, it has also been my part of work or statement to break the balance and create something unexpected.
The other interesting point about composition is good composition in photography. There are generally 5 different set of rules I have found. They are The Rule of Thirds, Leading lines, Reduce clutter, Contrasting Colours and Creative Framings.
A huge part of my practice these days is uploading the latest works on social media such as Instagram and Facebook which begs the question how do I take good photos for better presentation to attract more people. I haven’t reached the level of serious addiction yet ( I think) but it always feels like unresolved tricky homework to me.
Among 5 rules on composition to create more compelling photo the rule I feel especially passionate about is the rule of thirds to attract attention. the rule suggests that you “Divide your scene into a 3×3 grid with equal size rectangles and compose your subject in one third of the frame or on the line. This creates a more dynamic and pleasing composition since it gives more emphasis to your subject and their environment”.

I am still wondering why this image got the most likes on my Instagram page. Perhaps it is following one of the 5 rules ‘Contrasting colour’. - (Pink and black, I had had no idea until I made these works in pink and photographed them with a black background. Very Interesting!)
My homework for tomorrow at the studio will be to make one or a couple of very imbalanced works and see how I feel about it and if I can give attention or explanation for them. Will it be just fun or do I need to give any excuse for seeking for different sort of audience who will wear them on their body? Fun!
예술에서 구성이란 기본적으로 다양한 원칙과 기술을 하용해 시각적인 원소들을 배열한 것이다. 보통은 모든 서양 그림들을 서술할 때 사용되어진다. 잘 구성된 그림이란 보는 사람들을 매혹시켜 그림을 그린 예술가가 말하고자 하는 바를 잘 전달하게 된다. 이 구성의 구성요소는, 특히 서양얘술에서 일반적으로 고려되어 지는 것들: 균형, 대조, 집중, 움직임, 패턴, 비율, 리듬 그리고 화합등이 그것이다.
이 규칙을 현대장신구에 적용시켜보면 구성이야말로 내가 만드는 것의 거의 모든 것이다. 훌륭한 구성이란 내게, 내 작업에 혹은 내가 감상하는 예술작품들에 훌륭한 균형을 이루는 것 들이다. 그러나 내 작업에서 내가 말하고자 하는 것은 이러한 균형을 깨트려 무언가 예측되지 못한 것들을 만드는 것이 되어 왔다.
또 다르게 내 관심을 끈 구성의 흥미로운 점은 사진에서의 훌륭한 구성이란 무엇인가 하는 것이다. 일반적으로 다섯가지 규칙을 나는 발견했는데 그것은 삼분의 일 규칙, 중심선, 불필요한 배경 삭제, 색의 대조 그리고 창의적인 테두르기 등이다.
근래에 내 작품활동 중 큰 부분을 차지하는 것이 인스타그램이나 페이스북 등의 소셜 미디어에 최근 작업들의 사진을 올리는 것이다. 하여 어떻게 하면 더 좋은 사진을 찍어서 더 많은 사람들의 주의를 끌 수 있을까 하는 것이 내 집착이라고 할 수도 있는 큰 고민거리 이다. 아직은 심각하게 중독된 것은 아니지만 (내 생각에) 항상 뭔가 풀리지 않는 까다로운 숙제를 하고 있는 느낌이 매번 드는 것도 사실이다.
다섯가지 사진을 찍을 때 요구되는 구성의 규칙중 특히 삼분의 일의 규칙은 특히 내가 가장 주목하는 규칙이다. “당신이 찍을 장면을 격자무늬 위에 3대3의 직사각형으로 똑같이 나누거나 혹은 이 규칙을 따르기 위해 당신이 찍고자 하는 사물을 사진의 틀의 3분의 1의 부피를 차지하도록 구성시키거나 그 라인에 두도록한다. 이것은 당신이 찍고자 하는 주제물과 그 배경에 좀더 강조를 둠으로써 더 역동적이고 만족스러운 구성을 창조해 낸다.” 위의 나란히 있는 사진을 비교해 보아라. 감사하게도 나는 오른쪽 사진을 인스타그램에 올렸고 더 많은 주목을 받을 수 있었다. 그 다음의 이미지는 내 인스타그램 사진 중 가장 많은 ‘좋아요’를 받은 사진이다.
나는 아직도 왜 이 사진이 그토록 많은 ‘좋아요'를 받았는지 아리송하다. 추측건대 ‘색의 대조’-핑크와 블랙의 규칙을 따라서 그런 주목을 받았고 그러나 사실은 이 색의 조합을 나는 실재 분홍색 작품을 만들기까지는 알지 못했다는 것이다. 참 흥미롭게도!
내일 작업실에서 내 숙제는 완전히 균형이 깨어진 작품을 한두개 만들어 보는 것인데 그러면서 어떤 느낌이 일어나는지 어떻게 그것에 주목하고 설명하려 하는지를 발견해 보는 것이다. 이것을 그냥 즐기면서 하게 될 것인가 아니면 몸에 걸쳐 줄 지금까지 와는 다른 착용자 그룹을 발견하기 위해서 만들었다는 변명을 붙여야 하게 될 그런 작업이 될 것인가? 일단 만들어보고 즐겨보자!!
