Day 9: Place, space and pace

“Studio 24, our shared studio space, is part of the Mycelium Studios hub situated in a large converted warehouse. We are surrounded by a varied group of tenants which, over time, has included architects, print makers, publishers, sound people, painters, and 3D printers.  It is a space that facilitates the sharing of ideas, knowledge and support within Studio 24 and with the broader Mycelium complex adding the multilayered elements of community to our creative workspace.

Celebrating almost two years in this special environment, we will explore the meaning of a sharing a studio in a wider creative community and show how it can influence our practice and work. We would like to look outside our usual practices and reach out for the possibility of producing a new body of work. In the process we respect each other’s place, recognise creativity through communication in the space and enjoy different paces of working individually and collectively.” 

I am not so familiar with making a series of work under fixed theme. However, this project for a group show called STUDIO 24: Place, space, pace in September as part of Radiant Pavilion has provided an excellent opportunity for me to take some time off from my usual work to look around, have a play and get inspired. 

First trial was introducing 3D printing to my work. These are the prototypes for perforated cube in resin from Keith Brown’s 3D printing services. At this stage they are quite rough forms which need to refine more. I think I will be able to find a way to utilise this technology or at least I can find some interesting forms in different materials to build up possible new collection.

Reading place and space in Mycelium one thing that attracts my attention is the reticulation pipes and cable structure across the ceiling. They are interestingly connected and and are part of the supporting infrastructure of the building.

These are 4 prototypes of the pipe structures inspired by the ceiling. The 3 different sizes of these brass chenirs are 4mm, 3.1mm and 2.5mm outer diameters with 3mm, 2.5mm and 1.5mm inner diameters.

“ 우리가 함께 사용하고 있는 스튜디오 24는 개조된 큰 창고에 위치한 마이셀리움 스튜디오의 부분이다. 우리는 여러 다양한 직종의 세입자들에 둘러싸여 있는데 수년을 두고 건축가, 판화제작가, 출판사, 음향기술자, 화가 그리고 3D 프린터들이 이 건물을 오고갔다. 이런이유로 작게는 스튜디오 24 안에서 여러가지 아이디어, 지식을 비롯한 각종 도움을 주고받을 수 있는 공간이 우리의 창작 공간이 되었고 나아가서는 여기에 커뮤니티라는 요소를 몇겹 덧붙이는 광범위한 마이셀리움 스튜디오 내의 특별한 공간으로 거듭나는 의미를 갖고 있다. 

이런 특별한 환경에 벌써 2년이 다 되어감을 자축하며 우리는 큰 창작적 커뮤니티 속의 스튜디오라는 장소를 공유하는 의미를 탐구하고 그것이 우리의 실습과 작업에 어떻게 영향을 끼쳤는지 보여주게 될 것이다. 우리가 익숙한 실습과 작업을 넘어 존재하는 바깥세상을 살펴보고 새로운 일련의 작업들을 과연 생산할 수 있을 것인지의 가능성에 도전할 것이다. 그 과정에서는 서로의 공간을 존중하고, 그 공간 내의 의사소통을 통한 창의력을 인지하며, 서로 다른 속도로 개인적 혹은 단체로 일할 수 있음을 즐기게 될 것이다.” 

나는 어떤 고정된 주제를 가지고 일련의 작업을 하는 것에 익숙하지 않다. 그러나 그룹전 “스튜디오 24: 장소, 공간, 속도” 를 위한 프로젝트는 내 익숙한 작업들에서 떠나 주위를 둘러보고 몇가지 다른 시도를 해보면서 새로운 영감을 받게할 훌륭한 기회를 제공하게 될 것이다.  

첫번째 시도는 3D 프린팅을 내 작업에 도입하는 것이다. 첫 이미지는  Keith Brown’s 3D printing services라는 회사로 부터 도움을 받아 레진으로 찍어낸 천공 무늬를 가진 큐브들이다. 현재는 좀 더 다음어 질 필요가 있는 좀 미숙하고 거친 형태들이지만 이 기술을 꼭 활용할 수 있을 거라 생각하며 적어도 새로운 시리즈 작업을 위한 다른 재료를 사용한 흥미로운 형태를 찾을 수 있을것이라 확신한다.

마이셀리움 스튜디오라는 장소와 공간을 쭉 훓어보면서 가장 내 주위를 끈 것은 복잡하게 얽혀있는 파이프와 전선들의 구조물이 가득 찬 천장이었다. 그것들은 흥미롭게 연결되거나 연장되어 건물의 기능을 뒷받침 하고 있다. 

이 네개의 파이프 프로토타입들을 내가 천장의 구조물로 부터 영감을 받아 만든 것이다. 바깥직경 4, 3.1, 2.5 미리미터에 안쪽 직경 3, 2.5, 1.5 미리미터를 가진 서로 다른 크기의 황동 파이프 구조물이다. 정말 귀엽지 않은가!
