Day 92 : Work 92. New Ring in Silver (double perforation) - serious lockdown day1.
New lockdown of stage 4 restriction being applied in Melbourne where I live. I had to pack up my tools into boxes and move home as the studio facility has been shut down since Thursday, 6th August, 2020. The new isolation period is in full swing. Clearly I will not be able to do any major production however, I can still talk about the works I have made, the inspiration and the mindful creative moments. I am so sure there are suggestions of ways to fill your time during the isolation. From zoom meeting buddies, Facebook and family. I am setting a goal for myself to do as a daily task related to my work: “ Write something on my blog every day“. I do not want to miss creative moments and I certainly will fight the feeling of uselessness and hopelessness.
New rings have been created and the process of making has been difficult and time consuming but the outcome is quite satisfying . (The process of generating prototypes was shared at Day 86 ) Firstly I chose 2 different sizes of round perforated sheets, cut them into a strip and then combined them together by soldering. I made this combined strip into a ring and finished them with the sandblaster for better visualisation.

I transferred this model into a 3D file to print out. As I don’t have proper skill to work with 3D programs such as Rhino or 3D Max (yet) I got some professional help from a friend, fellow jeweller and artist, Chris Bahng. He beautifully transferred it into 3D design for printing.

As final step I took the file of the ring to casting/ 3D printing service and ask them to print it out in silver. My worry was even though the 3D printing technology is quite advanced, the peroration in design can be challenging. I was worried the form would contain imperfections that would make the rings fall below what people expect. For this reason I needed to find a service that had a very good 3D printer. I am very happy with the outcome. It is above what I expected and the very exquisite silver ring is now born.

내가 살고 있는 멜버른에는 다시 한층더 강화된 스테이지4의 새로운 폐쇄조치가 내려졌다. 이 조치로 지난 주 8월 6일 목요일 작업실이 문을 잠정적으로 닫고 나는 짐을 싸서 집으로 몇가지 도구들을 옮겨왔다. 바야흐로 새로운 격리의 시대가 열린 것이다. 당분간 중요 작품활동은 불가능 하겠으나 그 대신 내가 만든것들에 대해, 받은 영감에 대해, 창의적인 순간들에 대해 집중하여 이를 글로 옮길 수는 있을 것이다. 이미 우리는 혹은 줌 미팅을 통해, 혹은 페이스북을 통해 혹은 가족들을 통해 이 격리의 시간들을 견디는 방법들에대해서는 많은 답들을 구했을 것이다. 그렇다면 나는 내 작업과 연관하여 이 시기를 견디는 하나의 과제를 나에게 주고자 한다. 그것은 매일 내 블로그에 무언가를 쓰는 것이다. 나는 일상의 창의적인 영감들을 놓치고 싶지 않고 그리하여 내가 쓸모없다거나 희망이 없다는 따위의 생각들과 맞서 싸우고 싶은 것이다.
그 처음 이야기로 나는 최근 새로운 반지 시리즈를 먼저 소개하고자 한다. 반지들을 만드는 과정은 결코 쉽지 않았고 시간도 많이 걸렸으나 결과물은 꽤 만족스럽다. (견본을 만든 과정은 Day86 에 소개되어 있다) 처음 두개의 다른 크기의 천공판을 이용하여, 긴 띠형태로 잘라서 함께 땜을 한후 반지 형태를 만들고 시각적으로 깨끗하게 보이게 하기위해 모래 분사기를 이용하여서 표면을 세척하였다.
이 모델 반지를 다시 3D파일로 만들었다. 아직 3D 프로그램인, 라이노나 3D 맥스 같은 소프트웨어를 나는 잘 다루지는 못하여서 친구이자 같은 동료 장신구 작가인 크리스 방 에게 전문적인 도움을 받았다. 크리스는 이 견본 디자인을 3D 인쇄가 가능하도록 아주 유능하게 바꾸는 전문가이다.
마지막 단계로 나는 이 파일을 인쇄하여 주물로 제작하는 공장으로 가져가서 은으로 주문을 넣었다. 내 걱정은 3D기술이 아무리 발전해서 수없는 구멍이 난, 천공디자인은 내 오랜 경험 상 아무래도 깨끗하게 나오기가 힘들다는 것이었다. 그래서 사람들의 기대에 미치지 못하는 불완전한 결과물이 나올까봐 걱정한 것이다. 이런 이유로 나는 좀 더 좋은 3D 프린터를 가진 주물소를 찾았고 그 결과는 만족스웠다. 사실 내 기대 이상이었고 그리하여 정교하게 아름다운 이 은반지가 탄생한 것이다.
