Day 93 : Work 93. "Locked" in yellow gold- serious lockdown day2
I am so glad that I can show these new rings in 9ct yellow gold as well as silver. The price of gold is crazy at the moment. Like so many times of uncertainty, wars, recession, the COVID-19 era makes gold a safe haven. Despite the price the quality and value of gold to be seen in my work is really irreplaceable. Most of all the resistance of oxidisation is highly regarded. Working with gold and having an exquisite outcome sets up a precious and immutable set of rules I would like to keep for my work.
The process of production is similar to ring I posted yesterday Day 92. After making the prototypes they are transferred into 3D files for printing then casted in 9ct yellow gold. A top layer joined to a bottom layer. “Locked”
The two gold rings using two different patterns. One is a layer of round under square patterns and the other is round under hexagon patterns. They are called Locked.

Below is the path I have taken to design these rings. The design concept has been developed since 2015, starting with powder coated mildsteel and silver as you can see there is a lot of thought and development going into the process going into the final result.

새롭게 만들어진 반지를 은 뿐만 아니라 9캐럿 금으로 선보일 수 있어서 참 기쁘다. 지금 금 가격이 너무 비싼 건 사실이지만 전쟁이나 불황 같은 다른 여타의 불확실한 시대를 겪을 때 처럼 이 코로나 바이러스 시대에는 금만이 가장 안전한 피난처일지도 모른다. 그러나 이런 고가에도 불구하고 내 작업에서 보여주는 금의 질이나 가치는 어떤것으로도 대신할 수 없다. 산화되어 색이 변하는 표면이 아니라는 점이 무엇보다도 높이 평가되는 금의 성질이다. 금 작업을 해서 이렇게 정교한 결과물을 얻은 이 모든 과정은 내가 작업을 하면서 꼭 지키고 싶은 소중하고 변하지 않는 규칙이 될 것이다.
반지제작 과정은 어제 Day 92 에서 소개한 것과 거의 같다. 견본 샘플을 만든 후에 3D 파일로 옮겨 이번에는 9캐럿 금으로 프린트를 시켰다. 바깥쪽 천공 반지 층이 안쪽의 다른 무늬 천공 반지 층과 결합한 형태이다. “잠긴” 것이다.
이 두개의 금으로 된 반지들은 두개의 다른 패턴에 기반을 두고 있다. 하나는 원과 사각형, 다른 하나는 원과 육각형의 층으로 만들어졌다. 그렇게 서로 “잠겨” 있는 것이다.
위의 사각형반지들이 함께 있는 사진은 어떻게 이 새로운 “잠김” 반지가 나오게 되었는지 과정을 보여준다. 첫 디자인 컨셉은 2015년에 분체도장(powdercoating)을 끝낸 철과 은을 혼합한 반지로 시작되었다. 사진에서도 볼 수 있듯이 많은 생각과 발전의 과정을 겪어 결국 마지막 결과물이 나오게 된 것이다.
