Day 96 : Work 96. Cactus- lockdown day 5
I have just completed this pendant, “Cactus 2020”
I started making it on Day 1 : Work 1. Cactus pendant of this blog. It was Feb 26, 2019. I was trying to finish this blog within 100 working days but since after the first day for the next eighteen months I have faced so much personal upheaval in Korea and this year in the era of lockdown with virus. If we are able to be mindful in every single moment nothing should be really big enough deal to harm our days but there are things that inevitably hit hard and leave a mark. Now after the flood passes I can see some part of it more clearly. Now going through this lockdown and restrictions which are way out of our control the only thing you can do is to keep breathing and waiting for the tide to come back and take you somewhere.
I have been thinking of writing about this cactus pendant for a while but honestly I was quite vague on how I could start. But again by making my way back to perforation patten, which turns into an abstract cactus shape I realised that I could write about the small steps and long path to making it.
First of all in 2019 I made these 2 parts: one in simple black shape and the other with more structure like half sphere on the same shape to be united one pendant. It was always planned for this grey part to be powder coated in green. Finally the other image lower I finished 2 weeks ago.

Between the different years I used the black cactus shape again for this annual Christmas show, “About Face: The Monochrome Series” at Courtesy of the Artist gallery in Sydney. The image is photographed by Cesar Cueva . This was quite successful show and all 5 different earrings were soldout, which gives me great confidence to make more statement earrings.

There is always one spontaneous first moment that influences design. For me it was year 2010 when I was trying to produce as many black mildsteel pattern earrings as I could think of. Since then I have produced them with black or colours and now they all can be recognised as my originals.
It would be a mindful and creative activity if I took one of the patterns below and developed it into something wearable and write about the process to share the insight I have got along on the way.

“선인장 2020” 팬던트는 가장 최근에 완성시킨 것이지만 시작은 2019년 2월 26일 Day1 블로그에서 소개되면서 부터 이다. 사실 이 블로그는 100일간의 프로젝트로 해서 시작 되었지만 지난 1년반 동안 한동안은 한국에서 개인적인 많은 일들을 겪었야 했고 올해는 또 이렇게 바이러스로 인해 작업실에 나가지 못하는 피치 못할 상황에 이르렀다. 그러나 우리가 언제나 삶의 순간 순간에 깨어 있다면 어떤것도 우리의 일상을 다치게 할 만한 그렇게 심각한 무엇은 없을 것이다. 하지만 불가피하게도 또 어떤 상황들은 우리를 가격하고 깊은 상처를 남긴다. 지금 지나고 나서 보면 분명히 보이는 것들이 있다. 또한 우리 손으로는 좌지우지할 수 없는 이 제재와 봉쇄의 기간을 거치면서 지금 우리가 할 수 있는 것은 계속해서 숨을 쉬고 그러면서 어딘가로 당신을 데려갈 조류가 돌아오기를 기다릴 수 밖에 없는 것이다.
이 선인장 팬던트에 관해서 쓸 것이라고 한동한 생각하기는 했는데 어떻게 시작해야할 지 좀 모호했었다. 그러나 다시 내 천공된 패턴에대한 얘기로 돌아가서 그것이 결국은 이렇게 추상적인 형태의 선인장을 낳았다는, 그래서 이를 내 작업의 디자인을 기초하는 요소가 되었다는 얘기를 쓸수 있겠다고 여겨지게 된 것이다.
처음 2019년에는 아래의 두형태를 만들었는데 하나는 그냥 간단한 검정색의 패턴이고 나머지 하나는 여기에 반구형태가 더해져 둘이 결국은 합쳐지는 형태가 되는 것이다. 회색의 형태는 이후 초록색으로 분체도장을 입히게 된다. 마지막 형태가 2주 전에 완성시킨 그 아래의 이미지이다.
이렇게 2년의 세월이 뜨는 동안 나는 이 검정선인장 형태를 시드니의 Courtesy of the Artist gallery 라는 겔러리에서 매년 열리는 크리스마스 전시회를 위한 작품에 다시사용하였다. 전시제목은 “얼굴에 관해- 단색 시리즈”-2019 였고 이 아름다운 사진의 작가는 Cesar Cueva 이다. 무척 성공적인 전시회로 나는 참가작 다섯점을 모두 판매할 수 있었고 이것이 내게 크고 개성적인 귀걸이를 좀더 만들어 보자는 그런 창작에대한 자신감을 형성시켰다.
그러나 항상 시리즈가 시작될 때는 즉흥적인 첫 순간이 있는 법이다. 그것은 내가 아래의 검정 연강 패턴 시리즈 귀걸이를 많이 만들었던 2010년으로 돌아간다. 그때부터 지금까지 이런 형태의 검정색와 각종 다른 색깔을 풍성하게 생산해 왔으며 지금은 그것이 Jin Ah Jo original로 인정받고 있는 것이다.
아래 패턴 중 또 하나를 선택해서 그것에 집중하여 뭔가 또다른 장신구의 한 부분이 되도록 만들어보고 이 과정을 기술하여 거기서 얻은 통찰력 같은것을 나누어 보는 것은 어떨까?
