Day 79: Work 79. Potential series, "Drawing"
I have already talked about inspiration, making process and outcomes of these brick earrings on my other part of blog craft habit vol1.
It started with this exhibition, About face: Monochrome Series at Courtesy of the Artist in Sydney over Christmas time. We are so familiar with the stark contrast of white and black yet its mysterious balance when they are together. More often we even need both to complete the images drawn in our mind.
By using white bleached silver background the geometric black lines and structures of blackened mildsteel look more robust.
By laying three dimensional borders l would like to add dynamics to those flat 2 dimensional piled up-brick-looking back grounds. I noticed the positive space which would draw on white silver and the negative space which would be made between the border structure laid around.
Whether the colour is black or red the structure built on white background was too clear to get overlooked. It is just like drawing something on white paper. Having said that I will be able to make this as future reference to establish a potential series of work, which can be called, “Drawing”.
I have already made 5 of these earrings for the show, a private commission and stocks for other galleries but I still have a lot of different ideas with colours, patterns, structures and forms. I have figured the black and white, monochrome geometric structure was a tool for delivering strong message and getting autosuggestion for my making.
Possessing the clarity of design the experiment for their physical patterns and quality of the materials enables me to light upon another visual latent of design. I am considering utilising this brick pattern perforation more.
