Day 35: Obsession with outcomes
What if this development of new work does not work? What if no one is interested in this series? What if this is just waste of time? Can I even make it in the end? Why do I have impatience or anxiety with success as an artist? What does success in Art even mean? Art : what an opinionated words ever created!!
When you develop new work one thing you should take precaution to worry about the outcomes. If you worry about the outcomes of your project to produce new work consciously and unconsciously suddenly you will find yourself biting off more than you can chew. This greed will make you feel more miserable and negative so that in the end you will lose all the joy of making. The only thing I need to do now is to contain my sincerity into this new development. It is time for enjoying this journey not for obsessing the outcomes!
Meanwhile I have been enjoying making more new components from the parts and fittings of old watch so much. I have found many little fragments from my old work drawer, which includes some narrative of my experience and practice as an immigrant and an artist. Also I am waiting for a great parcel arrived from my father-in-law, Terry who used to be a watchmaker. He will send a box full of his collection of parts and fittings of the watches he made and repaired. This will open my eyes more.

만약에 이 새로운 작업들이 잘 개발되지 않으면 어떡하지? 만약에 아무도 관심이 없다면? 만약에 내가 지금 시간 낭비만 하고 있다면? 결국은 잘 만들게 될 것인가? 나는 왜 예술가로서의 성공에 이렇게 조바심을 내는가? 예술에서의 성공이란 또 무엇인가? 예술: 가장 주관적이고 독선적인 단어!!
만약 지금 새로운 작업을 하고 있다면 가장 경계해야할 것은 결과에대해 걱정하는 마음이다. 만약에 새로운 작품을 만드는 과정에서 결과에 대해 의식적 무의식적으로 걱정한다면 당신은 갑자기 욕심을 부리는 자신을 볼 것이다. 이 욕심은 당신을 더욱 초라하고 부정적으로 느끼게 만들어 결국 만드는 즐거움을 잃게될 것이다. 그러니 지금 내가 해야할 일은 작품개발에 진심을 담는 것이다. 지금은 이 과정을 즐기는 시간이지 결과에 집착할 때가 아니다.
그런 동안에도 나는 낡은 시계의 부품으로 새로운 부속품을 만드는 것은 아주 즐기고 있고 내 오랜 작업들이 담겨있는 서랍에서 이민자로서 혹은 예술가로서의 경험과 작품활동에 대한 이야기를 담을 수 작은 작업 파편들을 또 발견하였다. 또한 시계만드는 일을 하셨던 시아버지, 테리로부터의 소포를 기다리고 있는데 그가 만들고 고쳤던 시계의 많은 부품들의 콜렉션을 내게 보내실 것이다. 이것이 다시 내 눈을 더 뜨게 만들겠지..
