Day 24: So playful like STEM toys

The image above is my playing with the tubes I have been making. They can be connected so many different ways, creating different structures each time. These seem to be the most exciting things I have made very recently. Sometimes they look like a vacuum cleaner head or other times a control unit for suction and ventilation. I wondered if I could develop new toys for kids using the mechanism of connecting pipes. So I googled it, however, it turns out I am a little too late for that. There are so many toys using pipes out there already and they look really fun for kids to play, create and construct just like they can do with Lego.

What I have found is that STEM toys are properted to help “Team Building Skills, Dexterity, Hand-Eye Coordination, Engineering Skills, Creative Thinking, Spatial Reasoning, Motor Skills and Problem Solving Skills”. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. These toys are both educational and fun, which contribute kids’ creativity and imagination.

Now my daughter has reached the age where she is not interested in these toys, but what they can contribute to human brain development in early age is really amazing. If I can apply the points mentioned above into possible development and entertainment for grown-ups I think the development of my new range of work will stimulate and amuse me very much.

Now I feel like I am making toys not jewellery any more. Maybe that is why I think this whole process is so much fun and playful!

위의 레이아웃은 내가 만들고 있는 튜브를 가지고 해본 놀이이다. 튜브들은 매번 다르게 연결될 수 있고 그래서 매번 다르게 구조를 만든다. 아마 내가 최근에 만든 것들 중에 가장 신나는 작업들이다. 너무 놀이 같이 변해서 어떨 때는 그 구조가 청소기 머리 같고 또 다를 때는 공기를 흡입하며 제어하는 기구같이도 보인다. 그래서 내 생각은 어쩌면 내가 이 소박한 작동 원리와 연결원리를 이용해 아이들을 위한 장난감을 만들 수도 있겠구나 생각했다. 그래서 구글을 찾았지만 내 생각은 한발 늦은 것이었다. 파이프를 이용한 내 상상 속의 장난감들은 이미 너무 많이 세상에 나와 있었고 그것들 모두가 레고처럼 아이들이 가지고 놀면서, 창작하고 뭔가를 만들어가기에 흡족해 보였다.

그런데 내가 발견한 것은 그들 모두가 자신들을 스템 토이라고 광고 하면서 “팀원구성의 기술, 손재주, 손과 눈의 동작을 일치시키는 능력, 공학적 기술, 창조적인 생각,공간추론, 움직임 기술 그리고 문제를 해결하는 능력을 향상 시키는데 도움을 준다고 선전하고 있었다. 스템(STEM) 이란 과학, 기술, 공학 그리고 수학을 의미한다. 이 이상적인 장난감은 모두 교육적이면서도 재미있어서 아이들의 창의력과 상상력에 공헌할 것이다.

지금의 나는 아이가 이런 장난감에 관심을 많이 가질 나이가 지나버린 부모이지만 그것들이 인간의 뇌 발달에 공헌할 수 있는 점은 시사하는 바가 크다. 만약에 이런 좋은 점들이 성인의 가능한 발달과 유희에도 적용할 수 있다면 내가 만드는 새 작품들이 내 뇌를 발달시키고 즐겁게도 해 줄 것이다.

이제 진짜 나는 장신구가 아니라 토이를 만드는 것 같은 착각이 든다. 그래서 아마도 그 과정이 너무 재밌고 즐거운 장난을 하고 있는 느낌이 드는 것이다.
