Day 88 : Work 88. New Lockdown
A steep rise in Victoria’s coronavirus cases has reimplemented stage-3 restrictions to the residents of Metropolitan Melbourne. With the announcement the galleries I present my work in Melbourne have gone back to appointment-only operation and honestly I am quite worried about our mental well-being as well as financial one. I live in Brunswick which is next to Brunswick West one of the original lock down areas. My workshop in Brunswick East also boarders a lockdown, but that is academic now because we are all locked down.
Everyday we tread a fine line where we try not to get infected and not to go crazy.
Without consciously realising my work has began to reflect the time in isolation, lockdown and fear of contracting the virus. This collection “New lockdown window 1” started in the first lockdown in April. The Pendant has a black square at the corner of pink hexagon which is the flat surface of a window, which locks the geometric pink hexagon in the frame. Our usual familiar, good, colourful, active and useful things and our lives have been constrained temporarily.

A state of isolation or restricted access instituted as a security measure so that no one can leave or enter is the definition of lockdown. (It is interesting to Google this at the moment. The images are impressive, depressing and (sometimes) wonderfully fun and creative).

As a maker using steel these images are inspirational. There are so many possibilities using square perforation and dark black mildsteel. I am now creating a series of work for the second wave of lockdown. I have already found out a couple of amazing artists who have been creating works related this theme such as “bathroom” lockdown art by Banksy and Shaun Tan’s “Radius” which he said is a premonition of this arbitrary constraint.
In my lockdown series my theme is to express that everything is still there inside but from outside it is divided, separated and fractured therefore it is not exactly what it used to be and now it is something new, reformed, destroyed and restricted.
So is it bad or just unfamiliar and strange to us?

“새롭게 폐쇄된 창 #1”
호주 빅토리아주에서는 코로나바이러스의 감염자의 충격적이고 갑작스런 증가로 멜버른 주위의 광범위한 지역에 스테이지3의 규제를 다시 엄격히 적용시키게 되었다. 물론 이 발표로 내 작품을 전시하고 팔던 멜버른의 주요 겔러리들이 고객과의 약속을 위주로 비지니스를 운영하는 방식으로 다시 전환하였으며 당연히 이 전환은 정신적, 경제적 충격으로 다가왔다.
몇주전 멜번의 새 폐쇄 지역이된 브런즈윅 웨스트 라는 지역의 바로 옆 브런즈윅에 살면서 브런즈윅 이스트 지역에 있는 작업실에 일을 하러다니는 것이 이제는 별로 새롭거나 충격적이지 않은 이유는 사실상 지금은 어느곳이라 할 것 없이 모든 지역이 다 폐쇄지역이 되어버린 탓이다.
한마디로 말해 바이러스에 감영되지 않기 위해 또 완전히 미치지 않기 위해 우리는 매일 매일 이 살얼음판을 걷고 있는 것이다.
부지불식간에 내 작업은 이 소외, 제재라는 개념과 바이러스 감염을 반영하기 시작하였는데 이 새 작품인 “새롭게 폐쇄된 창문#1”은 사실상 첫번째 폐쇄 기간이었던 4월부터 시작되었다. 이 팬던트에서 검은 사각형을 분홍색의 반복적인 육각형 패턴 위에 올려서 마치 기하학적인 분홍의 육각형을 한 사각의 틀에 넣어버린 형태를 만들었다. 우리들의 일상적이고, 친근하여 좋게 느껴지며, 화사하고, 활동적이며 그래서 쓸모있었던 것들과 그런 삶들이 일시적으로 완전히 봉쇄되어버린 것이다.
폐쇄(lockdown)의 사전적 정의를 보면 치안유지를 위한 고립과 접근금지의 상태로서 아무도 나가거나 들어올 수 없는 상태를 말한다. (구글의 폐쇄(lockdown) 이미지를 찾아보면 흥미롭고, 우울하면서도 어떨 때는 놀랍게도 재미있고 창의적이다.)
강철을 주재료로 쓰는 작가로서 이런 이미지들은 모두 큰 영감을 주기에 충분하다. 천공된 사각형이나 아주 어두운 검은 색의 연강을 써서 폐쇄를 주제로한 작품을 만드는 것에는 무궁무진한 가능성이 있기 때문에 지금 나는 코로나 바이러스 제 2의 물결봉쇄를 주제로한 시리즈를 만들어 보고자 한다. 뱅크시의 “화장실 봉쇄” 는 최근의 실례로 들 수 있는 연관 작품이며 숀탠의 “레디어스”는 작가가 언급했듯이 이런 바이러스의 잠정적 규제를 이미 예언했던 작품으로 꼽힐 수 있다.
내가 시리즈로 만들 작품의 주제는 모든 것이 그대로 있는 내부와 그것을 나누어 버리고, 갈라지게 하고, 꺾여 부서지게 하는 외부로 부터의 충격 그래서 결국은 새롭게 재형성되고 파괴되며 또한 제한받아 결코 그 이전의 것으로 돌아갈 수 없는 그 무엇- 그것이 될 것이다.
그러면 이것은 그냥 나쁜기만 한 것일까? 아니면 단지 우리에게 낯설고 이상하게만 느껴지는 것일까?
