Day 83: Work 83. Is it always so hard to make rings (1) ?
During repurposing the half done pieces into the completed one thing I clearly wanted to make was rings for experimenting wearable forms and structures on the finger. Why does working on rings always seem so difficult that I cannot integrate making them into my daily practice easily? The reason is not so complicated. I have been making engagement rings and I can say I know what people want to buy for their engagement and wedding. The design changes on a fashionable whim but it is still and always will be quite conventional, I mean traditional- band with a big stone in the middle. Should it be easily wearable? Should it involve a big rock with precious gold? Then how can I weave a narrative into this to make special? Is it really the only way for a contemporary jewellery artist like me can make actual money?
The examples I have made this week above and the right are using the patterns of perforation I always use and I think people can see me in there little difficulty but I played quite safe. I have some ideas of advertising and promoting these rings on my online shop and will try with gold and gemstones as well to present at a couple of different galleries. The reason I said it was a safe try is I had calculated all these first then started to make them, which means not an outcome completely out of nowhere. It is not quite me…
Let’s not get paranoid about how I can make money out of producing rings but focus on how to make beautiful and clever structure on the finger when I try next time at the studio. When I can get there? Maybe around no.50?
