Day 71 : Work 71. 2 Cuff bracelets

Someone says the history of cuff bracelets date back to 7000 years ago by observing ancient Egyptians, Mayans and Incans wore them to show their social status . Some other article I read from this jewellery website is that for over 5000 years people have known cuff bracelets and in the 16th century it was as a symbol to identify a slave so that it was called slave bracelet. In India it was a symbol of love at the same time.

However, “slave bracelet” actually consists of a bracelet that attaches to a ring via a chain along the back of the hand. This chain can be interesting part because it can be as ornate as possible. It is true that these types of bracelet hardly can been seen in contemporary jewellery scene but I enjoyed this small learning.

Today cuff bracelet has become a fashion item. I have only made closed big bangles for many years so these new form of challenge makes me quite excited. After trying a couple of basic forms I have made this new design where a perforated dome is on top. The inspiration is from antique cuff bracelets with semiprecious stone like turquoise set on them. These are still quite experimental but I can see some potential for me to read and create them in contemporary way. It was a productive day.
