Day 102 : Work 102. For my bangles
I form perforated mild steel into sharp geometric structures retaining its original character and qualities. This transforms the steel from its manufacturing origins into a wearable piece of contemporary jewellery that explores shape and space. By forming this incredible metal into small structures for the body it is showing how the perforation changes its visual quality with the position of the light and how it generates more depth on the body.
The first bangle in this new collection was a blue round one. The form looking like a spinal staircase was from a simple idea to make wearable sculpture that follows the shape of the wrist. I like the perforated area to emphasise the depth of the structure whether it is worn or not.

After developing the first one I created its variations in different combination of colours and forms. I remember how excited I was and how much I really enjoyed making the progression. I was preparing for the annual exhibition, LOOT2015 at Museum of Arts and Design in New York City. I needed to produce 75 individual pieces and I remember it was the greatest challenge since I had started my career as a contemporary jewellery artist. It was also a great opportunity to develop a new range which has consolidated my position in the industry.

I especially love the black powder coated bracelets the most.
To avoid getting rust by frequent contact with water and perspiration on your wrist I powder coated these bangles with a matt black colour called Black Ace instead of blackening them with heat, oil and wax. Constructing bangles using perforated steel brings a lot of joy especially when I imagine the outcome with all different colours and structures that create different geometric qualities.

나는 천공된 연강을 그 금속 고유의 성질을 그대로 살려 날렵한 기하학적인 형태로 만드는 작업을 한다. 다시 말해 원래 산업 제조 목적의 강철은 내 손에서 형태와 공간을 탐구하는 현대 장신구로 바뀌게 된다. 이런 멋진 연강을 몸을 위한 작은 구조물로 형태를 바뀌게 하면서 나는 여러 구멍이 일률적으로 뚫린 천공이 어디서 빛이 오는가에 따라 시각적 효과가 달라 지고 또 어떻게 내 몸 위에서 장신구로서 구조적 깊이를 더해가는 지를 보여 준다.
새 팔찌 시리즈의 첫 작품은 파란색의 둥근형태의 팔찌 였다. 나선형태의 계단처럼 보이는 이 팔찌는 팔목의 모양을 따라가는 착용가능한 조각품을 만들어 보자는 간단한 생각에서 나왔다. 나는 이 팔찌가 착용 했을 때나 하지 않았을 때나 천공된 면적이 구조적 깊이를 더하는 것을 좋아한다.
첫번째 만족스러운 팔찌를 만든 후 나는 다양한 색과 형태로 계속 시리즈를 만들었다. 그때 내가 얼마나 만들면서 신이 났었으며 그 과정을 얼마나 즐겼었는지는 지금도 기억이 생생하다. 나는 뉴욕의 예술과 디자인 박물관에서 매년 열리는 LOOT2015 를 준비하고 있었다. 75점의 작품을 만들고 있어서 현대장신구 작가라는 커리어를 시작한 후 가장 힘이 들긴 했으나 동시에 많은 새로운 작업들이 창조되었던 시기이며 이것이 작가로서의 입지를 굳히게 해주는 계기가 된 것도 사실이다.
특히 나는 검은색 파우더 코팅된 팔찌들을 가장 좋아한다. 팔목에 차야 하므로 물과의 접촉과 신체의 땀으로 장신구가 녹 슬 수 있는 것을 방지하기 위해 나는 그냥 열을 이용해 오일과 왁스로 연강을 검게하는 작업 대신 무광 검정색으로 파우더 코팅을 하였다. 천공된 연강을 사용해 팔찌구조를 쌓아 올리는 작업은 각기 다른 색깔의 결과물이 나왔을 때를 상상하면 굉장한 즐거움이 된다. 표면의 색깔에 따라서 각자의 기하학적 성질이 다르게 나타나는 것이다.
아래의 사진은 “New Bracelets” (Nicolas Estrada) 에 실리게 될 사진이며 이 책은 2021년 부터 판매되어 진다. 이 팔찌들 중 하나는 멜버른의 내 작품을 전시하는 겔러리 중 하나인 Studio Ingot 에서 아직도 구입할 수 있으며 9월 28일 이후 작업실에 돌아가서 크리스마스를 준비해 좀 더 만들 예정이다.
