Day 43 : Work 43. Planned and Intuitive
I have been looking up these words, intuition and intuitive to try to find its antonym. Most of dictionary I can refer to such as Thesaurus.com, Oxford dictionary or even Wikipedia the antonym is reason, reasoning, intellect, or counterintuitive. However, they don’t seem to fit in design process of these works so I chose planned as is opposite.
They each are part of a brooch. Left one is what I made following the pattern of the sheet and I had one clear image when the work is completed as a brooch. So I can say it was planned. However, the right one is following the idea that I would love to make a very simple brooch with the colour of pink. Just like playing with legos for little children I piled up the structure, fill the gap with offcut and solder them in one.
I have been thinking what intuition means in creative practice. For me it is the process to catch up with the image I can draw in me, pretty much unconsciously. Making forms everyday in my practice following intuition is really essential part and I would love to go a little further to consider about “planned” and “intuitive” in my practice progressively.
Here is what I found from huffiest.com about intuition. It is beautifully stated about Pablo Picasso’s thought of intuition.
Picasso told a friend that intuition was like having a carrier pigeon with a message land on your balcony. “The important thing is knowing that the pigeon has arrived,” he said, “you don’t have to unroll the message and read it.”
